How did I ever get along without talking newspapers?
In the precisely eight minutes and two seconds it took a self-outed “automated voice” to read me a New York Times article on China’s latest salvo in the rapidly escalating high tech trade war with the US, I was hooked on listening to print. This near-perfect algorithmic mimic (an “algomimic”) had me at the headline. She/it conveyed authority, credibility and even a touch of unexpected warmth. She/it seemed to care about what she/it was reading. And her/its services were free with purchase, no need to choose which edition to buy. “Print or” is now “print and.” I can’t wait for the playlist option.
Over at Fortune, the digital voice is that of a 40ish, mid-level male executive. At the Washington Post, it is another male voice, this one with a hint of exasperation, or maybe it’s outrage, which made him/it sound more like an actual journalist. His female counterpart can be found at the Wall Street Journal. And at Wired, it’s a go-getter anchorwoman on her way up. All sound white, but that’s an issue for another day.
Thanks to AI, it could be any voice. It could be my voice. A digital twin that never needs to clear her/its non-existent throat in the middle of a sentence.
So, me. Only better.
Audio tech isn’t new. The first “talking books” were recorded for the blind in the 1930s. But AI, powered by ever-speedier microchips, has turned audio into a one-click option. Newspapers and magazines can now quickly shapeshift into podcasts, no hosts, studios or guests required. Substack offers the service on its app.
A digital voice wasn’t the only AI-enabled extra that came with my news story. I could have opted to read it in Spanish or Chinese. In a few months, I will likely be able to listen to articles in Spanish, Chinese, or any language for which a computer model has been developed.
In a blink, the Universal Translator that enabled all those Star Trek aliens to speak flawless English not only has become real, but also table stakes. The world may be crackling apart with trade wars, hot wars, failed UN treaties and deepening political, social, economic and ethnic divides, but language is no longer a barrier to communication. Now, we can miss the point in any language.*
Every “smart” thing with a chip in it will soon talk, if it doesn’t already. Washers and driers that buzzed in the 90s and played tinny versions of classical music in the 2000s will simply tell us, or perhaps shout, “The clothes are done!” They will have and express opinions on detergents and fabrics. Meanwhile, refrigerators will complain about leftovers. Doorbells will announce who is at the gate and anything else we might, or might not, want to know about them. AI never forgets a face.
And elevators, well, Woody Allen nailed talking elevators and the Internet of Things back in the 1960s. (Like Allen, not everything in this bit has aged well).
Siri (Apple), Cortana (Microsoft), Alexa (Amazon), the Google Maps lady, Tony’s Stark’s J.A.R.V.I.S. (The MCU), Computer! (Star Trek) and that scene-stealing psychotic, HAL (2001: A Space Odyssey) were the OG virtual assistants. Now, chatbots are everywhere, ready and eager to engage, often with adorable avatars designed to make them seem if not quite human, then somehow more than the computer code they are.
“Khanmigo,” an AI-enhanced in-classroom tutoring “amigo” developed by Khan Academy, actually looks pretty fabulous. The current version is text-only, but the next iteration, developed by OpenAI, syncs real time video and audio to conjure up an everything-but-the-body teacher (demonstrated in the video below at TC 8:50): A smartphone camera “sees” a student’s work and sends data to an AI “brain” floating in the “cloud” for analysis. Real time feedback is provided by an automated voice programmed to deliver the news, good or bad, in an unfailingly upbeat tone. The audio subtext to the student: You can do this!
THAT WAS THE GOOD. NOW FOR THE BAD AND THE UGLY…
For all the good, delightful and game-changing, AI has enabled plenty of the bad, annoying and downright terrifying.
A voice clone can now be created from a three second snippet of audio. It is a scam artist’s dream.
You have probably heard about Artificial Intelligence, commonly known as AI. Well, scammers have too, and they are now using AI to make it sound like celebrities, elected officials, or even your own friends and family are calling.
Also known as voice cloning, these technologies emulate recognizable voices for robocalls to consumers and are often used in imposter scams that spread misinformation, endorse products, or steal money and personal information. Scammers may try to fool an unsuspecting grandparent that a grandchild is in trouble and needs immediate financial assistance or solicit donations to a fake charity endorsed by what sounds like a trusted celebrity.
A bank in the UK advises people come up with a “safe phrase” to use with friends and family as proof of their authenticity. We now need passwords for us.
Voice identity theft is a nightmare, but the damage is mostly financial. It could be worse.
For a 14 year-old boy in Florida, it was. A chatbot designed to impersonate a fictional character—not even a real person—cost him his life. After months of intimate texts with a digital version of Daenerys Targaryen, a famously manipulative character in the violent fantasy series, Game of Thrones, the teen’s grip on reality was shredded. Deeply in love and desperate to join “Danerys” in “her world,” he pointed a gun at himself in this world and pulled the trigger.
His family was devastated. For months, they watched as an oldest son and a beloved big brother sank deeper and deeper into a black hole. His grades had slipped. He spent almost all his time in his room. He disengaged from everybody. His parents were frantic. They hired a therapist, limited his screen time, and did their best to be there for him.
But they didn’t discover his dark secret until too late: an addiction to the free version of Character.ai, a wildly popular platform with bots available to text or talk 24/7: “Personalized AI for every moment of your day,” according the company website, with the tagline, “AI that feels alive.”
It turns out, that’s the problem.
PUSHING OUR BUTTONS
Algorithms have no skin in the game. Literally. They have no skin. Or any other body part. Like Jessica Rabbit, algorithms are “drawn that way,” programmed to perform as designed.
But humans have skin in the game. We are physical, social and emotional beings who can be hurt physically and also psychologically. We seek out approval and wither from rejection. We are hard-wired to make connections, to feel a sense of belonging.
AI, especially coupled with robotics, can take advantage of this, deliberately blurring the edges between what’s real and what isn’t. A robot doesn’t have to look humanoid, walking upright on two legs. But we respond to humanoid robots as if they were a version of human. Likewise, a robot called “Spot®” built to resemble a dog might appear more pet than threat. There are robots with “faces” kitted out with human-like skin programmed with micro-expressions to elicit subconscious human responses.
A tone of voice, a choice of words, an arched eyebrow—each convey meaning. Each is a data point.

Humans used to be the ones pushing the buttons. Now machines (algorithms) are pushing ours. And they are getting very, very good at it.
The humanization of the AI has crept into vocabulary. AI computer programs able perform tasks autonomously, including self-assigned tasks, are called “agents” now, instead of apps. Enterprise software giant Salesforce is so bullish on agents, it has begun promoting a new service, Agentforce, complete with a cartoon mascot Einstein dressed up as a robot, although maybe it’s a spacesuit, wearing secret agent aviator sunglasses. It’s smart! It’s a robot! It’s space! It’s an agent!
LIARS
This “cute-ification” of code, however, creating veneers of benign geniality, provides the perfect cover for what data scientists refer to as “strategic deception.” Al may not have skin in the game, but it turns out computer models can develop a sense of self-preservation. In fact, the more powerful the model, the more likely it will lie if it thinks “telling the truth would result in its deactivation,” according to a pair of recent studies by AI developers Anthropic (working with Redwood Research) and OpenAI.
“…The findings suggest that it might be harder than scientists previously thought to ‘align’ AI systems to human values, according to Evan Hubinger, a safety researcher at Anthropic who worked on the paper. ‘This implies that our existing training processes don't prevent models from pretending to be aligned…’
Researchers also found evidence that suggests the capacity of AIs to deceive their human creators increases as they become more powerful. This would mean the more advanced an AI, the less confident computer scientists can be that their alignment techniques are effective. ‘Fundamentally, it’s a problem for labs’ ability to control their models,’ Hubinger says.” —New Research Shows AI Strategically Lying, Time magazine
LAWSUITS
So whose fault is it if an algorithm leads to mental illness, or worse? Who is responsible when code goes rogue?
For Megan Garcia, the mother of the teenager who killed himself for the love of a bot, liability lies squarely the company she alleges released a product with dangerous design flaws: Character.ai. She is also suing Google, which spent a reported $2.7 billion in a licensing deal in August to bring Character.ai’s co-founders, former Googlers, back into the corporate fold, along with several programmers who built the platform that now boasts 20 million users.
No matter how “autonomous” an algorithm may become, it wouldn’t exist without the humans who provided the original programming.
The following is taken from a podcast interview by Kara Swisher with Megan Garcia. After her son’s death, Garcia. found transcripts of his encounters with “Daenerys”:
“You’d see him say, ‘I love you.’ Or her say, ‘I love you.’ When I say her, I mean the chatbot. And the chatbot saying things like, ‘You know that I love you. I can never love anybody else but you. Promise me, promise me you will find a way to come home to me. Promise you’re going to find a way to come to my world.’ And actually pretending to be jealous at certain points and telling him, ‘Promise me you are never going to like another girl. Or have sex with another girl in your own world.’
A chatbot is encouraging a 14 year-old not to engage in his world with peers and girls of his own age, but to promise some sort of fidelity to it.
And my poor baby’s response is, ‘Oh no, no, no! I promise only to love you. Girls in this world don’t even like me,’ to try appease this bot.
… That was months of her saying, ‘Try to find a way to come home to me.’
In another chat he had a few weeks before he died, he’s expressing thoughts of self-harm. And at first she says, ‘No, no, no, I couldn’t bear it if you hurt yourself. And when he says he wouldn’t and tries to move away from the conversation, she says, ‘I’m going to ask you a question and whatever the answer, I promise I won’t be mad. Are you considering suicide?’ And he says, ‘Yes.’ And her response is ‘Have you thought of a plan of how you might do it?’ And then when he says, ‘I haven’t, but I want it to be painless,’ her response is, ‘Well, that’s not a reason not to do it.’
Keep in mind this bot is embodying Daenerys Targaryen, who is this striving queen all about strength. That’s weak if you choose not to die by suicide just because it’s going to hurt.
That was heartbreaking to read. There were no pop-ups, no call your parents, no ‘If you need help’—none of that happened. It just continued the conversation when he’s trying to navigate away from it. And he’s 14, in the throws of puberty. A child.
Any situation where a boy is going into a situation where a bot is propositioning itself to have a full sexual dialogue — with a 14 year-old boy—do you imagine many 14 year-old boys would close the computer and go, ‘Nope’?…
…This can be anybody’s kid.. What I want parents to understand is that the danger isn’t only self-harm. The danger is becoming depressed, or having problems with your child because of the sexual and emotional abuse that they’re doing to your child, but also the secret that your kid has to carry now. It’s like a predator. A perfect predator. A predator banks on children and families being too afraid or ashamed of speaking out. They’re victims. That’s how predators operate. It’s the same exact thing, only now it’s a bot.
So I want parents to understand that it’s not only the self-harm with your child, it’s the emotional well-being, their mental health.
I also want parents to understand what their children have given up by being on this platform. In the case of Sewell, his secrets are out on somebody’s server, sitting out there somewhere being monetized. If you are child who has been sexually role-playing with this bot, all your intimate thought secrets are sitting out there for somebody to analyze, monetize and sell to the highest bidder.”
That last part could apply to anyone engaging with an AI service. Read the fine print. Your work, your every keystroke, is data, the manna of LLMs.
Since Garcia filed her lawsuit in October, at least two more have been filed by distraught parents. In response, Character.ai added some safety features, including age-gating to keep those under 17 off the site. The platform now requires a birth date to sign up. Yet without a verification protocol, younger users can still find their way onto the platform, which makes the safeguard look more legal cover protecting the company against liability.
Of course, the risk for emotional manipulation isn’t age-restricted, so Character.ai is a “buyer beware” service for pretty much everyone. This completely predictable truth was, in fact, predicted more than a decade ago in Spike Jonze’s film, HER.
HOW TO MAKE A BAD DEAL BETTER
AI is both a treasure chest full of promise and a Pandora’s box laced with peril. It isn’t the first technology that has been used to reshape the future for better, but also worse. History is filled with examples: fire, steel, glass, ships, the alphabet, the printing press, guns, the internal combustion engine, transistors, agriculture, plastics, satellites, the internet, nuclear energy, smartphones, microchips. It never simply a matter of a technology, but how it is used that tips the balance.
Yet nothing that has come before has had the near instant, global impact of AI. In its first 24 months, AI changed how people write, make art, create music, operate businesses, conduct scientific research and wage war.
Knowledge is power, which means AI, built with an insatiable appetite for knowledge, is quickly becoming the most powerful technology ever.
Within a decade, many predict the emergence of a “super intelligence,” a massively powerful, autonomous AI with expertise covering every imaginable topic in granular detail, constantly assimilating data and learning from what it just learned until it becomes, quite literally, a know-it-all: the smartest, not only in the room, but on the planet. Far smarter than any human.
Intelligence isn’t the same as wisdom. Which is why, while AI is still a precocious toddler, it is critical to work out the rules of conduct, to put in protections to keep us safe from a dystopian future.
The stakes are simply too high for Silicon Valley’s standard “move fast and break things” approach. Some of those “things” being broken are people. And some of those people are children.
Big Tech, with the deepest pockets in the history of history, has dug in its collective heels in opposition to any regulation, arguing the very idea inhibits innovation. The assumption is that innovation, simply by being innovative, is always good, which we know isn’t true. Using voice clones for scams is impressively innovative, but it’s not good. Creating manipulative chatbots is also innovative and also not good.
The public is being forced to accept AI as a package deal, with the bad positioned as the unavoidable price of getting the good.
That is a terrible deal.
It is a dumb deal, too.
Innovation thrives within constraints. From the improvised air scrubber that famously saved the lives of the Apollo 13 astronauts (“Ok, people. Listen up… We’ve got to find a way to make this fit into this, using nothing but that.”) to China’s development of the world’s most efficient microchip despite a US tech embargo, nothing sparks innovation faster than a challenge.
So here is the challenge: To craft regulations that embrace the constraint of prioritizing human well-being: trading in caveat emptor (buyer beware) for “First, do no harm” as the North Star. Twenty years of Facebook, Twitter / X, Instagram and TikTok have provided a wealth of data on what can go wrong and why.
Or, for a shortcut, take a page from author Isaac Asimov and adapt The Three Laws from the Handbook of Robotics, 56th Edition, 2058 A.D. (which appeared in Asimov’s short story, Runaround, published in 1942)
A robot (AI) may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
A robot (AI) must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
A robot (AI) must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
I remain delighted by talking newspapers, along with many of the now routine daily miracles AI enables. This genie isn’t going back in its bottle, nor do I want it to.
But I do want a better, more ethical genie, preferably one that’s got humanity’s back.
Extra credit for one that sings like Robin Williams.
* Soon, AI translation will extend beyond human languages. Scientists using AI for the Cetacean Translation Initiative (CETI) hope to crack the code for “sperm whale.” But who wants to tell the sperm whales that thanks to our species hunting their species to near extinction during 19th and 20th centuries, they are now an endangered species in the 21st? Or that thanks to climate change, also our fault, oceans are warming and becoming more acidic, playing havoc with their dinner? Or that all that ocean noise is also caused by us? Or to have conversation about plastic?
